Driver Ed Course
Why does my child have to be a certain age on the first day of class?
To register, students must be at least 14 years and 6 months old on or before the first day of class. This is a DMV state law, and no exceptions are allowed.
Can I still take driver education if I am over the age of 18?
If you're 18 or older and still enrolled in a public, private, charter, or licensed home school in Cumberland County, you're eligible for driver education.
Before scheduling behind-the-wheel lessons:
- Apply for a learner's permit at the DMV.
- Make a copy of your permit.
- Give the copy to your high school's driver ed instructor.
- Bring your permit with you to every behind-the-wheel session.
What happens if I have a medical consideration?
If you're referred for a medical review, your physician may need to provide details about your condition to the NC Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) for evaluation. Final licensing decisions are made by the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
About the Driver Medical Evaluation (DME) Program:
- Administered by the DMV
- Medical reviews handled by DHHS medical professionals
- Referrals can come from doctors, family members, license examiners, or law enforcement
If You're Referred for Medical Review:
- A local DMV representative will contact your parent and provide forms for your physician to complete.
- Your physician submits the completed forms to the DMV Medical Review Board.
- Once a decision is made, a letter will be sent to both your parent and the referring DMV representative.
If You're Approved to Drive:
- The DMV will issue a Restricted Permit Form and Medical Clearance Form to the Cumberland County Driver Education Coordinator.
- Once processed, you'll be contacted to schedule your driving lessons.
